DPAT 618 SEMINAR

DPAT 618 is a seminar-style course in the Department of Oncology and Diagnostic Sciences where departmental research faculty, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and staff come together in a bi-weekly basis to discuss research material in the format of a journal club or data club. To this end, in the journal clubs graduate students and postdoctoral fellows present recently published high-impact original articles in the field of their research interest. The oral pathology residents present manuscripts related to advances in pathological entities. Data clubs are devoted to the presentation by principal investigators or laboratory members of recently obtained data from their own research activities in the department. Complementary to these well-attended activities and during each academic term, a guest speaker from the UMB campus, University System of Maryland university or other local/national institution is invited to present a lecture in his/her area of biomedical research expertise. Overall, the goals and objectives of this course are to: 1-    To train and engage postdoctoral fellows and graduate students in an interactive scientific discussion in current topics in biomedical research. 2-    To train graduate students in handling, understanding, presenting, and discussing original research articles. 3-    To encourage practice of critical thinking, data analysis and evidence based scientific research.4-    To be up to date with the state of the art in biomedical research including specific areas such as oncology, immunology, microbiology, angiogenesis, and skeletal biology. 5-    To be introduced to other faculty members and their area of research expertise. 6-    To trigger interest and open new opportunities for graduate students into the current research endeavors being carried out in the Department of Oncology and Diagnostic Sciences.
