SOWK 836 ADVANCED QUALITATIVE METHODS

This doctoral course is designed to provide students with an opportunity to explore advanced qualitative research methods for data collection and analysis. The course will focus on two families of social work methods chosen by the students (such as ethnographies, narratives, or visual and embodied methods- see sample below) that center diverse ways of understanding, knowledge production, and representation. The students will explore the ontological and epistemological underpinnings of these methods, assess their compatibility with professional values, develop skills to identify goodness of fit for these qualitative research methods for particular research questions, populations, and topics, reflect on ethical implications, and engage with hands-on practice experience within a supported classroom environment. The course will also cover presentation of research methods in academic and professional contexts such as submissions to juried conferences, peer-reviewed journals, or job applications. Students will also have mentored teaching opportunities through peer-to-peer presentations and feedback in the classroom and within the wider SSW and UMB community. SOWK 826, NURS 815 or other equivalent foundational qualitative research methods course serves as a prerequisite for this course.
