GPLS PUBLIC COMMUNICATIONS SKILLS FOR SCIENTISTS GPLS 740

Every scientist must advocate for their work before a variety of audiences—including review committees, journal editors, colleagues, the media and the public. Researchers who can tell compelling stories about their work are more likely to receive funding, get published, and be seen as experts in their fields. Effective science communication must be practiced, refined and honed. With this course, we want to expose participants to key elements of successful science communication and to help them improve their ability to communicate using a variety of mediums about science with a range of audiences. This course will primarily be project‐driven (written and oral), using a minimum of didactic lectures to provide fundamental knowledge. Instructors will include scientific faculty, educators, communications experts, and industry professionals to teach, improve and assess advanced communication skills in attendees. Students will receive feedback on their skills such as use of language and tone, recognition of audience needs, ability to translate technical information in a clear and concise manner, creativity in conveying meaning or method of communication, and adjustments to improve approach and delivery of information. Intended for 3rd year PhD or 2nd year MS students.
